What time does 3A Tatkal booking start?
3A Tatkal opens at 10:00 AM IST, one day before the journey date. It opens together with the other AC Tatkal classes: 2A, 3A, CC and 3E.

Which date should I search for 3A Tatkal?
Search on the day before your journey date, at 10:00 AM IST. The quota is tied to the travel date, so a train leaving on the 15th is booked on the 14th.
For trains that run past midnight or start from an earlier station, the date that counts is the date the train departs from your boarding station. Check the date shown on the IRCTC search result. Use the Tatkal countdown to see how long is left until the window opens for your travel date.
Who gets the first 30 minutes in 3A Tatkal?
Aadhaar-verified individual users get the first 30 minutes. Authorised agents are barred from AC Tatkal between 10:00 and 10:30 AM IST, as of 2026.
This does not guarantee a seat. Demand on popular routes can still empty the quota within minutes. But it means that during those 30 minutes you are competing mainly with other individuals, not booking agents.
Do I need Aadhaar to book 3A Tatkal?
Yes. Online Tatkal booking requires an Aadhaar-authenticated IRCTC account, and Aadhaar OTP is mandatory, as of 2026. Without it you cannot complete a Tatkal booking online.

How much extra is the 3A Tatkal charge?
The 3A Tatkal charge is 30% of the basic fare, with a minimum of ₹300 and a maximum of ₹400, as of 2026. It is added on top of the normal fare.
Here is a quick worked example. If the basic 3A fare is ₹1,200, 30% is ₹360. That falls between ₹300 and ₹400, so ₹360 is the Tatkal charge. On a short, cheap route the minimum of ₹300 applies. On a long route the cap of ₹400 applies.

Is 3A Tatkal the same as 3E Tatkal?
No. 3A is AC 3 Tier and 3E is AC 3 Economy. Both are AC Tatkal classes that open at 10:00 AM IST, but they are different classes with different fares, and 3E runs only on some trains.
If your train offers both, check each one. The AC Tatkal classes are exactly 2A, 3A, CC and 3E. First AC (1A) and Executive Class (EC) have no Tatkal quota at all.
What should I do before 10:00 AM?
Log in early and have everything ready, so that from 10:00 AM you only select the train, class and quota. The preparation matters more than clicking fast.
- Log in at least 5-10 minutes before 10:00 AM IST and confirm your session is active.
- Save passengers in the Master List with correct names, ages and genders.
- Keep one payment method ready, preferably UPI or a saved bank option you have used before.
- Know your train number, boarding station and a backup train.
- Confirm that your Aadhaar OTP is working on your registered mobile number.

How do I book 3A Tatkal step by step?
Search your train, pick the 3A class with the Tatkal quota, choose passengers from the Master List, and pay. Move quickly but read each screen, since a wrong class or date is hard to fix.
- At 10:00 AM IST, search from and to stations for the next day's date.
- Select the train and tap the 3A class. Choose the Tatkal quota.
- If seats show as available, select passengers from your saved list.
- Enter the captcha if shown and proceed to payment.
- Complete payment and wait for the confirmation. Do not press back or refresh during payment.

Is it better to book 3A Tatkal or 3A in the 60-day window?
If you know your plans two months ahead, the 60-day advance window is far better. Booking at 8:00 AM IST, 60 days before travel, gives you a normal fare and far more choice, with no Tatkal premium.

What if I miss the 3A Tatkal window?
You still have options. Check for cancellations in the same class, try nearby trains, or look at other classes.
- 3A on a different train. A train an hour or two later may have seats left.
- 3E or CC. If your route has them, they are open at the same 10:00 AM IST time.
- Sleeper at 11:00 AM. It opens an hour later and may still have berths.
- Chart time. Cancellations keep releasing seats until the chart is prepared. As of 2026, the first chart is prepared about 8 hours before departure, and by about 9:00 PM the previous night for trains leaving between 5:00 AM and 2:00 PM. See chart preparation time.
No one can promise a confirmed seat, so always keep a plan B.
Can I cancel a 3A Tatkal ticket?
Yes, but refunds on confirmed Tatkal tickets are limited. Confirmed Tatkal tickets generally do not get a refund of the Tatkal charge, and cancellation deductions apply. Rules for waitlisted and cancelled trains are different.
