How do I work out my 2S Tatkal date?
Count one day back from the journey date at your boarding station. Tatkal follows the date the train departs from where you board, not the date you decide to travel.
If a train crosses midnight before reaching your station, the boarding date can differ from the origin date. Read the departure date IRCTC shows for your boarding station. The Tatkal countdown tool shows how long is left before the next window opens.
What happens in the first 30 minutes of the 2S window?
Authorised agents are barred from Tatkal for the first 30 minutes of the window. For 2S that is 11:00 to 11:30 AM IST. For AC classes it is 10:00 to 10:30 AM IST.
This head-start is for Aadhaar-verified individual users, under a rule effective 2025. It does not guarantee a seat. It only removes agent bookings from the start of the window, so the first few minutes matter most.
Do I need Aadhaar to book 2S Tatkal online?
Yes. Online Tatkal booking needs an Aadhaar-authenticated IRCTC account, and Aadhaar OTP is mandatory (effective July 2025). This applies to 2S as much as to AC classes.

How much is the 2S Tatkal charge?
The Tatkal charge for 2S is 10% of the basic fare, with a minimum of ₹10 and a maximum of ₹15 per passenger. It is added on top of the normal 2S fare.
2S is the only class charged at 10%. Every other class pays 30% of the basic fare, within its own limits.

Is Tatkal worth it for a 2S journey?
Often the better plan is to skip Tatkal altogether and book in the 60-day window. The Tatkal charge on 2S is small, but the real cost is the risk of missing out at 11:00 AM IST.

Why do 2S Tatkal attempts fail?
Most failures come from setup problems, not slow typing. Fix these ahead of time and your first attempt has a far better chance.
- Logging in at 11:00 AM IST sharp, then waiting on a slow OTP or captcha.

What if my 2S Tatkal ticket is waitlisted?
A waitlisted Tatkal ticket is not a confirmed seat. Whether it confirms depends on cancellations before the chart is prepared.
As of 2026, the first reservation chart is prepared about 8 hours before departure. For trains leaving between 5:00 AM and 2:00 PM, it is prepared by about 9:00 PM the previous night. Can I cancel a 2S Tatkal ticket?
You can cancel, but a confirmed Tatkal ticket cancelled by the passenger generally gets no refund. Full refunds apply only in railway-side cases, such as a cancelled train. The Tatkal charge is generally not refunded.

Which classes have no Tatkal quota?
First AC (1A) and Executive Class (EC) have no Tatkal quota. The AC Tatkal classes are exactly 2A, 3A, CC and 3E, and the non-AC classes are SL and 2S.
