How Tatkal charges work

The Tatkal charge is a fixed premium added to the basic fare for booking under the urgent Tatkal quota. It is 10% of the basic fare for Second Sitting (2S) and 30% for all other classes, but never below the class minimum or above the class maximum.

For example, a Sleeper ticket with a ₹400 basic fare: 30% is ₹120, which sits between the ₹100 minimum and ₹200 maximum — so the Tatkal charge is ₹120, and the ticket costs about ₹520 before reservation fee and GST.

How is the Tatkal charge calculated?

The Tatkal charge is a percentage of the basic fare — 10% for Second Sitting (2S) and 30% for all other classes — subject to a minimum and maximum per class: 2S ₹10–15, Sleeper ₹100–200, AC Chair Car ₹125–225, AC 3 Tier ₹300–400, AC 2 Tier ₹400–500. It is added to the basic fare only.

Which classes have no Tatkal charge?

Tatkal is not available in First AC (1A) or Executive Class (EC), so there is no Tatkal charge for those classes.

Is the Tatkal charge refundable?

No. The Tatkal premium is non-refundable. Confirmed Tatkal tickets are generally non-refundable on voluntary cancellation; a full refund applies only if the train is cancelled or delayed over 3 hours (via TDR).
