Sleeper (SL) Tatkal booking opens at 11:00 AM IST, one day before your journey date. That is an hour later than AC Tatkal, which opens at 10:00 AM IST. The time is the same for every train, route and station, so the only thing you need to get right is the date.
This guide covers the exact opening time, how to work out the date, the first-30-minute head-start for individual users, the Sleeper Tatkal charge, and what to prepare before 11:00 AM. All rules are as of 2026.
What is the Sleeper Tatkal booking time?
Sleeper Tatkal opens at 11:00 AM IST on the day before your journey. If your train departs on the 20th, SL Tatkal opens at 11:00 AM IST on the 19th.
Second Sitting (2S) shares the same 11:00 AM IST opening. The AC classes (2A, 3A, CC and 3E) open earlier, at 10:00 AM IST. If you are comparing classes, our guide to Tatkal timing for different classes lays them side by side.
| Class | Tatkal opens (IST) | Opens |
|---|---|---|
| SL (Sleeper) | 11:00 AM | One day before journey |
| 2S (Second Sitting) | 11:00 AM | One day before journey |
| 2A, 3A, CC, 3E | 10:00 AM | One day before journey |
How do I work out my Sleeper Tatkal date?
Count one day back from the journey date of your boarding station. Tatkal is not tied to the day you decide to travel, only to the date the train leaves the station where you board.
If your train starts its run earlier and reaches your station after midnight, the boarding date can differ from the date the train left its origin. Always read the departure date shown on IRCTC for your boarding station. The Tatkal countdown tool shows how long is left before the next window opens, which helps when you are unsure.
What happens in the first 30 minutes of the Sleeper window?
Authorised agents are barred from Tatkal for the first 30 minutes of the window, so individual users have a head-start. For Sleeper that means 11:00 to 11:30 AM IST. For AC classes it is 10:00 to 10:30 AM IST.
This head-start is meant for Aadhaar-verified individual users, under a rule effective 2025. It does not guarantee a seat. It simply removes agent bookings from the start of the window, so the first few minutes are your best chance.
Do I need Aadhaar to book Sleeper Tatkal online?
Yes. Online Tatkal booking needs an Aadhaar-authenticated IRCTC account, and Aadhaar OTP is mandatory (effective July 2025). This applies to Sleeper Tatkal as much as to AC.
Do this well before the day. Link and verify Aadhaar, and make sure the mobile number tied to it can receive an OTP. If you have not done this yet, follow our guide to linking Aadhaar with your IRCTC account.
How much does Sleeper Tatkal cost?
The Tatkal charge for Sleeper is 30% of the basic fare, within a minimum of ₹100 and a maximum of ₹200 per passenger. That charge is added on top of the normal Sleeper fare.
| Class | Rate | Minimum | Maximum |
|---|---|---|---|
| SL | 30% of basic fare | ₹100 | ₹200 |
| 2S | 10% of basic fare | ₹10 | ₹15 |
| CC | 30% of basic fare | ₹125 | ₹225 |
| 3A | 30% of basic fare | ₹300 | ₹400 |
| 2A | 30% of basic fare | ₹400 | ₹500 |
These are the official IRCTC figures. For the exact amount on your fare, use the Tatkal charge calculator. The full breakdown is in our Tatkal charges guide.
Is Sleeper Tatkal easier to get than AC Tatkal?
Not necessarily. Sleeper is the cheapest long-distance class, so demand on popular routes is high and seats can go within minutes of 11:00 AM IST.
Because the window opens an hour after the AC window, some travellers try AC first and then switch to Sleeper if it fails. That can work, but only if you have budgeted for it and your account is ready for a second attempt. Decide your fallback class before the morning, not while the clock is running.
If you have a choice of dates, booking in the 60-day advance window gives better odds than relying on Tatkal. Our guide to the advance reservation period explains how those 60 days are counted.
What should I do before 11:00 AM IST?
Be logged in with everything saved before the window opens. The last few minutes are for booking, not setup.
- Confirm your IRCTC account is Aadhaar-authenticated and your OTP number works.
- Save passengers in the Master List so you can add them in one tap.
- Keep UPI or net banking ready, and check your balance in advance.
- Log in by 10:45 AM IST, a few minutes before the window.
- Search with the Tatkal quota selected, then choose your train and Sleeper class.
Train Genie can email you before both your 60-day booking date and your Tatkal window, so you are not relying on memory. You can set a free booking reminder once for a journey.

What are the common mistakes at 11:00 AM IST?
Most failed Sleeper Tatkal attempts come from avoidable setup problems, not from slow typing. Fix these before the day and your first attempt is far more likely to go through.
- Logging in at 11:00 AM IST sharp, then waiting on a slow OTP or captcha.
- Entering passenger details by hand instead of using the saved Master List.
- Searching with the General quota selected instead of Tatkal.
- Having an Aadhaar-linked mobile number that cannot receive an OTP.
- Checking the wrong date, especially for trains that cross midnight.
Our guide on why Tatkal tickets fail goes through each of these in more detail.
What if my Sleeper Tatkal ticket goes to the waiting list?
A Tatkal ticket can end up waitlisted, and a waitlisted ticket is not a guaranteed seat. Whether it confirms depends on cancellations before the chart is prepared.
As of 2026, the first reservation chart is prepared about 8 hours before departure. For trains leaving between 5:00 AM and 2:00 PM, it is prepared by about 9:00 PM the previous night. A final chart is prepared about 30 minutes before departure. Use the chart preparation time tool to see when yours is due. For what usually decides the outcome, read about waiting list Tatkal tickets.
Can I cancel a Sleeper Tatkal ticket?
You can cancel, but a confirmed Tatkal ticket cancelled by the passenger generally gets no refund. Full refunds apply only in railway-side cases, such as a cancelled train. The Tatkal charge itself is generally not refunded.
Rules differ for waitlisted tickets. Check the Tatkal refund rules or the refund calculator before you pay if your plans are uncertain.
Which classes have no Tatkal quota?
First AC (1A) and Executive Class (EC) have no Tatkal quota. The AC Tatkal classes are exactly 2A, 3A, CC and 3E, and the non-AC classes are SL and 2S.
If you are travelling in a premium class, Tatkal is not an option. Plan for the 60-day window instead.
