Link Aadhaar to IRCTC for Tatkal: Steps and Fixes for 2026

·6 min read·Train Genie team

To book Tatkal tickets online in 2026, your IRCTC account must be Aadhaar-authenticated, and you must enter an Aadhaar OTP during booking. The rule has applied since July 2025. Do the linking days before you need it, not on the morning a Tatkal window opens.

This guide covers who needs it, the steps, how to verify passengers, and what to do when the OTP or name match fails.

Do I need to link Aadhaar to book Tatkal?

Yes. For online Tatkal booking on the IRCTC website and app, you need an Aadhaar-authenticated account and Aadhaar OTP verification at booking. This has been mandatory since July 2025.

Regular advance bookings (the 60-day window) do not depend on this rule. But the same linking also helps you elsewhere, so it is worth doing even if you rarely book Tatkal.

There is a second reason to do it early. Authorised agents are barred from Tatkal for the first 30 minutes of the window: 10:00–10:30 AM IST for AC and 11:00–11:30 AM IST for non-AC. That head-start is meant for Aadhaar-verified individual users, so an unverified account gives up the advantage.

What you need before you start

You need three things: an active IRCTC account, your 12-digit Aadhaar number (or a Virtual ID), and the mobile number registered with Aadhaar.

The OTP goes to the number linked with your Aadhaar, not necessarily the number on your IRCTC profile. If you no longer use that SIM, fix it first. Mobile updates are done through UIDAI, and they can take time.

Also keep your Aadhaar name handy. The name on your IRCTC profile should match the Aadhaar record, because mismatches are the most common reason verification fails.

How to link Aadhaar to your IRCTC account

Log in to IRCTC, open the Aadhaar authentication option in your account menu, enter your Aadhaar number, request the OTP, and submit it with your consent. A success message confirms the link.

Menu labels change between app and website versions. On the website the option has appeared as "Authenticate User" under the account menu, and some versions label it as Aadhaar KYC under your profile. If you cannot find it, check the official IRCTC site or app, because the layout may differ from this description.

The usual flow looks like this:

  1. Log in to your IRCTC account on the website or app.
  2. Open the account menu and choose the Aadhaar authentication or KYC option.
  3. Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number or Virtual ID.
  4. Tick the consent box and request the OTP.
  5. Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
  6. Wait for the confirmation message, then log out and back in to check the status.

If your account was created with an incomplete profile, complete your name, date of birth and gender first. These details feed the match against Aadhaar.

How to verify passengers in your Master List

Account authentication covers you as the booker. Co-travellers can be added and verified separately through the Master List in your profile, where each saved passenger shows a status such as Pending or Verified.

Add everyone you travel with often: family, friends, colleagues. Doing this ahead of time also saves typing under pressure, which our guide on how to book a Tatkal ticket fast covers in more detail.

Keep the passenger name exactly as it appears on their ID. A short form or a missing middle name is a common cause of a failed match.

What to expect on booking day

On a Tatkal morning, you log in, search, choose the Tatkal quota, enter passengers and reach payment. At that stage, IRCTC asks for an Aadhaar OTP to complete the booking.

That OTP step is where many people lose seconds. Your phone needs signal, the SMS must arrive, and you need to type it quickly. Keep the phone unlocked and next to you before the window opens.

Check the exact opening times for your class with the Tatkal countdown. AC classes open at 10:00 AM IST and non-AC classes at 11:00 AM IST, one day before the journey. Tatkal is not available in First AC (1A) or Executive Class (EC).

Common problems and fixes

Most failures come from four causes: no OTP, name mismatch, server load and an outdated profile. Each has a simple fix, and none of them is solved faster on Tatkal day.

The OTP does not arrive. The mobile number registered with Aadhaar is probably old or inactive. Update it with UIDAI, then try again. Also check that your phone is not blocking promotional or unknown-sender SMS.

Name mismatch. Edit your IRCTC profile name so it matches your Aadhaar record, then retry. Do this before the day you need to book.

An error after submitting the OTP. Servers are busier around popular booking windows. Wait a while and try again outside the Tatkal hours instead of repeating the request in a hurry.

Authentication shows pending. Log out, log back in and check the status again. If it still shows pending after a day, contact IRCTC support through the official channels.

When should you do the Aadhaar linking?

Do it at least a few days before your target booking date, and preferably the moment you know you will book a Tatkal ticket. Treat it like a prerequisite, not a task for booking day.

A simple routine works well: link the account, verify your regular passengers, then test a login on the app and the site. That way the only thing left on the day is the booking itself.

If you are planning a trip further out, the timing is different. The 60-day advance window opens at 8:00 AM IST, and the booking window calculator tells you the exact date for your journey. You can use the waiting time to complete the account setup.

Train Genie can also email you before those windows open, so the setup and the date both stay off your mind. You can set that up on the booking reminder page.

Checklist before your next Tatkal

Run through this list a few days ahead:

  • IRCTC login works on both the website and the app.
  • Aadhaar authentication shows as complete.
  • The mobile number on your Aadhaar is active and has signal.
  • Your profile name matches your Aadhaar record.
  • Regular passengers are saved and verified in the Master List.
  • You know the opening time for your class: 10:00 AM IST for AC, 11:00 AM IST for non-AC.

For the full rulebook, read Tatkal booking rules. For class-wise timings, see Tatkal timing for different classes.

FAQ

Is Aadhaar mandatory for Tatkal booking on IRCTC?

Yes, for online Tatkal booking in 2026. You need an Aadhaar-authenticated IRCTC account and must enter an Aadhaar OTP during the booking. The rule has been in force since July 2025.

Which mobile number gets the Aadhaar OTP?

The OTP goes to the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar. If that number is inactive or outdated, update it with UIDAI before you try again.

Can I book Tatkal for family members who do not have an IRCTC account?

You book from your own authenticated account and add them as passengers. Save them in the Master List ahead of time with names exactly as on their ID. Check the current IRCTC rules for any extra verification on their side.

Does Aadhaar linking give me an advantage in the first 30 minutes?

Authorised agents are barred from Tatkal for the first 30 minutes of each window. That head-start is intended for Aadhaar-verified individual users, so a verified account is the one positioned to use it.

Does Tatkal work for First AC and Executive Class?

No. Tatkal is not available in First AC (1A) or Executive Class (EC). The AC Tatkal classes are 2A, 3A, CC and 3E.

Can I link Aadhaar on Tatkal morning itself?

You can try, but it is a poor plan. An OTP delay or name mismatch at 9:55 AM can cost you the whole window. Link it days earlier.

Aadhaar is the one part of Tatkal you can finish well before the window. Once it is done, get a free email reminder for your 60-day and Tatkal windows on the Train Genie booking reminder page.
