How cancellation charges work

For a confirmed ticket, the deduction is time-based, measured from scheduled departure: more than 48 hours before, only a flat clerkage charge; 48–12 hours, 25% of the fare; 12–4 hours, 50%; and under 4 hours or after chart preparation, nothing for confirmed tickets.

By when should I cancel to get the most refund?

Cancel a confirmed ticket more than 48 hours before departure to lose only the flat clerkage charge. Between 48 and 12 hours before, 25% of the fare is deducted; between 12 and 4 hours, 50%; and under 4 hours before (or after chart preparation) there is no refund for confirmed tickets.

Are the deadlines based on booking time or departure time?

Departure time. All refund tiers are measured backwards from the train's scheduled departure from your boarding station, not from when you booked.

What about waitlisted or RAC tickets?

Waitlisted and RAC tickets have a smaller flat clerkage (around ₹60) and can be cancelled up to about 30 minutes before departure. Fully waitlisted e-tickets are auto-cancelled and refunded after chart preparation if they don't confirm.
