Regular Tatkal has a fixed surcharge on top of the base fare. Premium Tatkal uses dynamic pricing, so the fare climbs as seats sell out. Both open one day before the journey at the same times, and neither gives you a meaningful refund once a seat is confirmed.
This guide compares the two quotas side by side so you can decide which one to target. All details are as of 2026; Indian Railways changes rules often, so check IRCTC before you pay.
Tatkal vs Premium Tatkal at a glance
The main differences are price, availability and how much the fare can move. Booking windows, Aadhaar rules and the agent restriction are identical.
| Feature | Regular Tatkal | Premium Tatkal |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | Fixed: 10% of basic fare for 2S, 30% for other classes, within min/max caps | Dynamic: fare rises as demand grows |
| Where it runs | Most trains with a Tatkal quota | Select trains only |
| Booking opens | AC 10:00 AM IST, non-AC 11:00 AM IST, one day before | Same |
| Aadhaar OTP | Mandatory for online booking | Mandatory for online booking |
| Confirmed ticket cancellation | Generally no refund | Generally no refund |
| Concessions | Not available | Not available |
If a train does not run Premium Tatkal, regular Tatkal is your only last-minute quota on it.
How regular Tatkal pricing works
Regular Tatkal adds a fixed charge to the basic fare: 10% for Second Sitting (2S) and 30% for every other class. That charge is held between a minimum and a maximum for each class.
As of 2026, the caps are:
| Class | Minimum | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Second Sitting (2S) | ₹10 | ₹15 |
| Sleeper (SL) | ₹100 | ₹200 |
| AC Chair Car (CC) | ₹125 | ₹225 |
| AC 3 Tier (3A) | ₹300 | ₹400 |
| AC 2 Tier (2A) | ₹400 | ₹500 |
Because of the caps, the surcharge on a long, expensive journey stops growing at the maximum. You can work out your exact figure with the Tatkal charge calculator.
How Premium Tatkal pricing works
Premium Tatkal fares are dynamic: the price moves up as more seats in the quota are sold. Early buyers pay less than late buyers, and there is no fixed surcharge table to look up.
This is the single biggest practical difference. With regular Tatkal you know the extra amount before you open the app. With Premium Tatkal, the fare shown on the search screen can be noticeably higher than regular Tatkal, and it can change between your search and payment. Check the final amount on the payment page before you confirm.
Booking time and eligibility are the same
Both quotas open one day before the journey date. AC classes open at 10:00 AM IST and non-AC classes at 11:00 AM IST.
Authorised agents are barred for the first 30 minutes of each window (AC 10:00–10:30 AM, non-AC 11:00–11:30 AM IST), which gives individual users a head-start. Online booking needs an Aadhaar-authenticated IRCTC account, and Aadhaar OTP is mandatory as of July 2025.
Neither quota is available in First AC (1A) or Executive Class (EC). The AC Tatkal classes are 2A, 3A, CC and 3E. To see when the window opens for your date, use the Tatkal countdown.
Refunds: both are harsh
Neither quota is forgiving once a seat is confirmed. A cancelled confirmed Tatkal or Premium Tatkal ticket generally gets no refund.
Refunds are limited to situations outside your control, such as a cancelled train. The details can differ by case, so read our Tatkal refund rules guide before assuming anything. If your plans are shaky, the cheaper and safer route is an advance booking, not either last-minute quota.
Which one should you book?
Book regular Tatkal first. It is cheaper, the surcharge is predictable, and it runs on far more trains. Switch to Premium Tatkal only when regular Tatkal is sold out, the trip is urgent, and the fare is acceptable to you.
A simple way to decide:
- Is your travel date fixed and unavoidable? If not, consider another train or day.
- Is regular Tatkal still available on your train and class? If yes, book it.
- Is Premium Tatkal offered on that train? If yes, compare the displayed fare with a flight, bus or an alternate train before paying.
- Can you afford to lose the full amount if plans change? If not, skip both.
Better than either: book at 60 days
Both quotas exist because people miss the advance window. General booking opens 60 days before the journey at 8:00 AM IST, and ordinary-fare seats are cheapest and easiest then.
If you already know your travel date, the cheapest strategy is to book on day 60 and avoid Tatkal entirely. A free email reminder from Train Genie can alert you before the 60-day window and the Tatkal windows open, so you are not working it out by hand. The booking window calculator also tells you the exact opening date for any journey.
Tips if you do go for Tatkal or Premium Tatkal
A few habits improve your chances in both cases:
- Verify Aadhaar on your IRCTC account well before the day.
- Save passenger details in the Master List so you only select names.
- Log in a few minutes early and keep UPI or net banking ready.
- Know your boarding station and class before the clock hits 10:00 or 11:00 AM IST.

Common mistakes to avoid
Most failed last-minute bookings come from preparation, not the quota you chose. These are the mistakes that cost people seats.
- Assuming Premium Tatkal exists on your train. Check the quota dropdown first, so you are not hunting for it at 10:00 AM.
- Opening the app late. Seats in popular classes can go within minutes, so being a few minutes late matters.
- Skipping Aadhaar verification. Without it you cannot complete an online Tatkal booking at all.
- Booking Tatkal for a shaky plan. Since confirmed tickets are generally not refunded, treat the payment as spent.
- Confusing the dates. The window opens one day before the journey, not on the day of travel. Our Tatkal timing by class guide lists each class.
A quick example
Say you need a 3A seat tomorrow. Regular Tatkal adds 30% of the basic fare to the ticket, but the charge is capped at ₹400 for 3A, so the surcharge stops growing past that point.
Premium Tatkal for the same seat has no such fixed cap on the extra amount, so the total depends on how many seats are already gone. If regular Tatkal is open, it is the better value. If it is sold out, compare the Premium Tatkal fare against your alternatives before paying.
FAQ
Is Premium Tatkal more expensive than Tatkal?
Usually yes. Premium Tatkal uses dynamic pricing, so the fare rises as seats are sold, while regular Tatkal adds a capped surcharge to the base fare. Early in the window the gap can be small; later it can be much larger.
Do Tatkal and Premium Tatkal open at the same time?
Yes. Both open one day before the journey, at 10:00 AM IST for AC classes and 11:00 AM IST for non-AC classes. Agents are barred for the first 30 minutes of each window.
Can I cancel a Premium Tatkal ticket for a refund?
Generally no. A confirmed Premium Tatkal ticket is not refunded on cancellation, similar to regular Tatkal. Refunds are limited to special cases, such as a train being cancelled.
Is Premium Tatkal available in First AC?
No. Neither Tatkal nor Premium Tatkal is available in First AC (1A) or Executive Class (EC). The AC Tatkal classes are 2A, 3A, CC and 3E.
Is Premium Tatkal available on every train?
No. It runs only on selected trains, so a train you want may offer regular Tatkal only. Search the train on IRCTC and look at the quota options.
What is the cheapest way to avoid both?
Book at the start of the 60-day advance reservation period, 8:00 AM IST. A booking reminder helps you remember the exact date.
