You check Tatkal seat availability on IRCTC by searching your route and date, selecting the class, and choosing the Tatkal quota. Tatkal seats only exist for a short window: as of 2026, bookings open at 10:00 AM IST for AC classes and 11:00 AM IST for non-AC classes, one day before the journey.
That timing shapes everything about checking availability. Before the window opens, you can only see what the General quota looks like. This guide shows where to look, how to read each status, and how to plan so you are ready when Tatkal opens.
Can you see Tatkal availability before the booking window opens?
No. Tatkal seats are only released for booking one day before the journey, so a proper Tatkal availability picture does not exist until the window opens. Before that, the General quota is the only live signal you have.
Tatkal seats are carved out of the train's total seats. Whatever is left in General a day or two before travel is a rough guide to how tight the train is. It is not a promise that Tatkal will have seats.
If your date is more than 60 days away, nothing shows at all. The advance reservation period (ARP) is 60 days, with bookings opening at 8:00 AM IST. Use the booking window calculator to find the exact day your date opens.
How do you check Tatkal seat availability step by step?
Search the train on IRCTC for your date, pick the class, and select Tatkal as the quota. The status shown for that class is the live Tatkal availability.
- Open the IRCTC website or app and log in.
- Enter the From and To stations and the journey date.
- In the quota dropdown, choose Tatkal (or Premium Tatkal if you want dynamic pricing).
- Search, then tap the class (SL, 3A, 2A, CC and so on) for the train you want.
- Read the status line for your date.
Do this once the window is open. If you search at 9:55 AM for an AC train, you are looking at an empty or unreleased quota. Your search is only meaningful from 10:00 AM IST for AC classes and 11:00 AM IST for non-AC classes.
What do AVAILABLE, RAC and WL mean on a Tatkal search?
AVAILABLE means seats are free right now, RAC means you get a shared berth, and WL means you are on the waiting list. Each status comes with a number, and that number is the part that matters.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| AVAILABLE-xx | xx seats are open to book right now |
| RAC xx | Reservation Against Cancellation: you travel, but may share a berth |
| TQWL xx | Tatkal quota waiting list, position xx |
| GNWL / RLWL / PQWL | Waiting lists from other quotas, mostly seen on General search |
| REGRET | No more bookings possible for this quota |
A low AVAILABLE number can disappear in seconds at the start of the window. The status you see while searching is not locked until payment goes through.
For what a waiting-list ticket really means, read the Tatkal waiting list guide. It covers TQWL and what happens at the chart.
Which classes have Tatkal seats?
Tatkal is available in SL, 2S and the AC classes 2A, 3A, CC and 3E. It is not available in First AC (1A) or Executive Class (EC), so those never show a Tatkal quota.
If your search shows no Tatkal option for a class, check that you are not looking at 1A or EC. For the class-by-class opening times, see the Tatkal booking time guide.
Remember that Tatkal charges are added on top of the base fare. Run your numbers in the Tatkal charge calculator before you decide between Tatkal and a waiting-list General ticket.
When should you check, and when does the quota open?
Check right at the opening time. AC Tatkal opens at 10:00 AM IST and non-AC (SL and 2S) at 11:00 AM IST, one day before the journey date, counted from the train's starting station.
For the first 30 minutes of each window, authorised agents are barred. That head-start is for individual users with an Aadhaar-verified IRCTC account. As of 2026, Tatkal online booking also requires Aadhaar OTP authentication.
A few practical points:
- Be logged in before the window opens.
- Have your passenger list saved in your IRCTC profile.
- Keep payment details ready.
Use the Tatkal countdown to see how long is left for your journey date. If you would rather not watch the clock, Train Genie can email you before the Tatkal window and before your 60-day booking date opens. You can set a free booking reminder once and stop tracking dates by hand.
What if Tatkal shows waiting list or no seats?
If Tatkal shows a waiting list, you can still book, but nothing guarantees confirmation. A waiting-list ticket only confirms if enough confirmed passengers cancel before the chart is prepared.
Treat WL as a risk, not a plan. Here are your realistic options:
- Check another class. A different class on the same train may have free seats.
- Check nearby trains and dates. Availability changes a lot between departures.
- Check a split journey. Booking to an intermediate station can show seats the full route does not.
- Try Premium Tatkal. It uses dynamic pricing, so the fare is higher. Read the Premium Tatkal guide for how it differs.
- Watch the chart time. As of 2026, the first chart is prepared about 8 hours before departure, or by around 9 PM the previous night for trains leaving between 5 AM and 2 PM. See chart preparation time.
Avoid guessing odds. Confirmation chances vary by train, season and class, and no one can promise them.
Why does availability change or disappear while you book?
Availability is live, so seats are taken by other users while you fill in details. By the time you reach payment, the number you saw can be lower, or the quota can show WL or REGRET.
The usual causes are slow logins, retyping passenger details, and payment failures. These are covered in detail in why Tatkal bookings fail and Tatkal tips and tricks.
Use the Tatkal passenger form speed-ups from the Tatkal form guide. Saved passengers, UPI or a stored wallet, and a stable connection do more than any trick.
What about cancelled tickets and last-minute seats?
Seats can reappear when passengers cancel, which is why a sold-out train can show AVAILABLE again later. These are usually single seats and go quickly.
Refund rules for cancelled Tatkal tickets are strict, so check them before you book. See Tatkal refund rules and use the refund calculator to check what you would get back.
Once the final chart is prepared, roughly 30 minutes before departure, remaining vacant berths are handled differently. Do not rely on getting a seat at that stage.
Common mistakes when checking Tatkal availability
Most failed searches come from timing and setup mistakes, not from the website itself. Avoid these:
- Searching before the window opens. The quota will not show real seats.
- Using the wrong boarding station. Tatkal timing follows the journey date from your boarding point. Check your station choice if the quota looks closed.
- Looking at 1A or EC. Neither has Tatkal.
- Mixing up quotas. A General WL number tells you nothing about Tatkal.
- Not being Aadhaar-verified. Online Tatkal needs an Aadhaar-authenticated account with OTP, as of 2026.
For the full list of conditions, read the Tatkal booking rules.
Frequently asked questions
Can I check Tatkal availability a week in advance?
No. Tatkal seats are released one day before the journey, so there is nothing real to check a week ahead. You can look at General quota availability to judge how full the train is, but that is only a rough signal.
What time should I check AC Tatkal availability?
Check at 10:00 AM IST on the day before your journey. The first 30 minutes (10:00 to 10:30 AM IST) are reserved for individual users because agents are barred during that time.
Why does Tatkal show WL when I search?
Tatkal has a limited seat pool. If those seats are gone, the system lets you join a Tatkal waiting list. Confirmation depends on cancellations before the chart, and it is never guaranteed.
Does Tatkal availability show for 1A or Executive Class?
No. Tatkal is not offered in First AC (1A) or Executive Class (EC). The AC Tatkal classes are 2A, 3A, CC and 3E.
How can I avoid missing the Tatkal window?
Note your journey date, count back one day, and set an alarm for 10:00 or 11:00 AM IST depending on class. A free email reminder from Train Genie can also tell you when both your 60-day and Tatkal windows open.
Set a reminder before the window opens
Checking availability only helps if you are there when the quota opens. Train Genie sends a free email reminder for your 60-day advance booking date and your Tatkal window, so you search at the right moment.
