Tatkal Booking Reminder: Never Miss the 10 AM and 11 AM Window

A good Tatkal booking reminder fires 15 minutes before your window opens, on the day before your journey. AC Tatkal opens at 10:00 AM IST and non-AC Tatkal at 11:00 AM IST, so the alert belongs at 9:45 AM or 10:45 AM IST. The reminder does not book the ticket for you. It makes sure you are logged in and ready when the clock starts.

This guide covers which date to set, which time to set, and what to prepare while the reminder is counting down. All timings are as of 2026.

What date should a Tatkal reminder be set for?

Set it for one day before your journey date. Tatkal for a train departing on the 15th opens on the 14th.

The date is counted from the journey date of your boarding station, not from the date you decide to travel. If your train leaves late at night or runs past midnight, check the departure date shown on IRCTC for your boarding station before you set the alert.

If you want to confirm the date without counting, use the Tatkal countdown. It shows how long is left before each window opens.

What time should the reminder go off?

Set it 15 minutes before opening: 9:45 AM IST for AC classes and 10:45 AM IST for non-AC classes. That gives you time to log in without rushing.

Class Tatkal opens (IST) Suggested reminder (IST)
2A, 3A, CC, 3E 10:00 AM 9:45 AM
SL, 2S 11:00 AM 10:45 AM

The AC Tatkal classes are exactly 2A, 3A, CC and 3E. First AC (1A) and Executive Class (EC) have no Tatkal quota, so there is nothing to remind yourself about for those classes.

An alert at exactly 10:00 AM is too late. Login pages, OTP messages and payment apps all take a minute or two when many people are online.

Why does being early matter more than being fast?

Most failed Tatkal attempts start before the window opens, with a login problem, a missing passenger detail or an unverified account. Speed in the booking form helps, but only if everything else is ready.

The first 30 minutes of each window are also the best chance for individual users. Authorised agents are barred for the first 30 minutes: 10:00 to 10:30 AM IST for AC and 11:00 to 11:30 AM IST for non-AC. That head-start applies to individual users, and online Tatkal needs an Aadhaar-authenticated IRCTC account with Aadhaar OTP (effective July 2025).

No reminder can guarantee a confirmed seat. Tatkal quota is limited and demand is high. The reminder only removes avoidable mistakes.

What should I do when the reminder goes off?

Use the 15 minutes to run a short checklist. Do these in order:

  1. Open the IRCTC app or website and log in.
  2. Confirm your Aadhaar-linked mobile number can receive the OTP.
  3. Open your saved passenger list and check names, ages and berth preferences.
  4. Keep UPI, a card or net banking ready, with the bank app logged in.
  5. Search your train with the Tatkal quota selected, so the page is already loaded.
  6. Note your fallback: a second train or class in case your first choice has nothing.

If the page says your date is outside the booking window, the Tatkal date has not arrived yet. Our guide on trains outside the booking window explains what that message means.

Should I set one reminder or several?

Set two or three. One reminder can be missed, silenced or swiped away, so a backup costs you nothing.

A simple layout for a Tatkal trip:

  • The evening before the Tatkal date: a short alert to charge your phone, check your balance and confirm the date.
  • 15 minutes before opening: the main alert, at 9:45 AM or 10:45 AM IST.
  • At opening time: a final alert, if you tend to be mid-task.

Put the train number, class and boarding station in the alert text. For example: "Tatkal 3A, 12345 Delhi to Patna, opens 10:00 AM." That saves you from searching for details when time is short.

Which tool should I use to set the reminder?

A phone alarm, a calendar event or an automated email all work. The best one is the one you will not forget to set.

  • Phone alarm: quick and loud, but it carries no details and you must create it for every trip.
  • Calendar event: lets you add the train, class and a note. Set the notification to 15 minutes, not at the start time.
  • Automated email reminder: does the date maths for you and lands in your inbox ahead of the window.

Train Genie sends a free email reminder for both the 60-day booking window and the Tatkal window. You can set it up on the booking reminder page once per journey.

Is Tatkal the right plan, or should I book earlier?

If your date is still more than a day away, the regular booking window is usually the better first plan. General booking opens 60 days before the journey at 8:00 AM IST.

Tatkal is a late-stage fallback. It has extra charges, and confirmed Tatkal tickets that you cancel generally get no refund. Use the Tatkal charge calculator to see the added amount for your class before you commit.

For the earlier window, read the advance reservation period guide. A reminder for the 60-day date and a second one for Tatkal gives you two chances for the same trip.

What are the common mistakes with Tatkal reminders?

The most common mistake is setting the alert for the opening time itself instead of 15 minutes before. The second is setting it for the wrong day.

Other mistakes to avoid:

  • Mixing up AC and non-AC times. AC is 10:00 AM IST and non-AC is 11:00 AM IST. They are different windows.
  • Forgetting Aadhaar authentication. You cannot fix this at 9:59 AM. Do it days earlier.
  • Relying on a silent phone. Check that the alarm sound is on and Do Not Disturb will let it through.
  • Planning around 1A or EC. These classes have no Tatkal quota.
  • Having no fallback. Always know your second train or class before the window opens.

For more tactics once the window opens, see how to book Tatkal fast and the Tatkal booking rules. For the timings by class, see Tatkal timing for different classes.

What does a Tatkal morning look like with a reminder?

With a 9:45 AM IST alert for a Friday journey, you book on Thursday. The alert fires, you log in, and you have 15 minutes to get everything in place.

  • 9:45 AM: reminder fires. Log in and check the passenger list.
  • 9:55 AM: search your train with the Tatkal quota selected and keep the page open.
  • 10:00 AM: AC Tatkal opens. Refresh, pick your class and book.
  • 10:30 AM: agents can now book AC Tatkal too, so competition rises.
  • 10:45 AM: second alert for SL or 2S if you are booking non-AC as well.
  • 11:00 AM: non-AC Tatkal opens. Individuals have the first 30 minutes again.

You can use one logged-in session for both windows. The point of the reminder is that the preparation is already done when each minute arrives.
