IRCTC Refund Rules 2026: When You Get Money Back and How Long It Takes

·7 min read·Train Genie team

Whether IRCTC refunds you depends on why the ticket is being cancelled. If you cancel a confirmed ticket yourself, you get the fare minus a deduction that grows as departure nears. If the railway cancels the train, or a waitlisted ticket never confirms, the money comes back to your original payment method.

This guide sorts every common situation into one of those buckets, so you know what to expect before you click anything. Railway rules change, so confirm figures on IRCTC before acting on a high-value ticket. For the exact rupee deductions on voluntary cancellations, see our cancellation charges guide.

What are the basic IRCTC refund rules?

IRCTC refunds depend on four things: the ticket status (confirmed, RAC or waitlisted), who cancelled it, how close to departure it was cancelled, and whether the chart is prepared. Cancel early and you lose little. Cancel late and you lose a lot, or everything.

For a voluntary cancellation of a confirmed ticket, as of 2026:

Time before departure Deduction
48 hours or more Flat clerkage only
12 to 48 hours Higher of flat clerkage or 25% of fare
4 to 12 hours Higher of flat clerkage or 50% of fare
Under 4 hours, or after the chart No refund

You can run your own numbers in the refund calculator.

Do I get a refund if the railway cancels my train?

Yes. If Indian Railways cancels the train, you are entitled to a full refund of the fare. For online tickets, IRCTC generally processes this automatically to the original payment method, so you usually do not need to file a TDR.

Keep an eye on your booking history and your email. If no refund appears after a reasonable period, check the refund status in your IRCTC account before filing a complaint.

What if my train is badly delayed?

A full refund is possible if the train is delayed by more than three hours at your boarding station and you choose not to travel. You must file a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) on IRCTC before the train actually departs.

If you are late and the train has already left, the claim is much harder. When a long delay is announced, decide quickly and file the TDR before its scheduled departure time.

What happens to a waitlisted ticket that does not confirm?

A waitlisted ticket that is still waitlisted when the chart is prepared is cancelled automatically, and the fare is refunded minus a flat ₹60 per passenger. You do not need to cancel it. You also cannot travel on it.

If you cancel a waitlisted ticket yourself before the chart, the same ₹60 deduction applies. So dropping a hopeless waitlist early costs you the same as waiting, and it frees your mind to book an alternative.

What about RAC tickets?

An RAC ticket cancelled before the chart is refunded as the fare minus the flat clerkage for your class. After the chart, there is no refund on a voluntary cancellation.

RAC means you get a seat to sit on, even if you share a berth. If that works for you, you may not need to cancel at all.

Are Tatkal tickets refundable?

A confirmed Tatkal ticket is not refunded when you cancel it voluntarily, and the Tatkal charge is not returned in any case. Refunds are possible only in the same railway-fault situations: train cancelled, long delay, or a coach or class you booked not being provided.

Waitlisted Tatkal tickets that fail to confirm are cancelled at chart time and refunded without the Tatkal charge. Our Tatkal refund rules guide and the guide to cancelling a Tatkal ticket cover the details.

Tatkal is available in the AC classes 2A, 3A, CC and 3E and in non-AC classes. It is not available in First AC (1A) or Executive Class (EC).

What if money was deducted but no ticket was booked?

If your account was debited and no ticket was generated, the amount is normally reversed to your payment source automatically. This usually takes a few working days, depending on your bank or payment mode.

Do not book again in a panic. Check your booking history and transaction history first. Booking twice and then cancelling one ticket costs you clerkage you did not need to pay.

When can I file a TDR, and how?

You file a TDR when a refund is not automatic but you have a valid reason. Typical cases are a long delay, a diverted route that skips your station, an AC failure, or not being accommodated in the class you booked.

Steps on IRCTC:

  1. Log in and open your booked ticket history.
  2. Choose the ticket and select the file TDR option.
  3. Pick the reason, submit, and note the reference number.

Some reasons need a certificate from the TTE. File within the time limit shown for your reason, as late claims are rejected.

How long does an IRCTC refund take?

Automatic refunds for online tickets typically reach your original payment method within a few working days. TDR claims usually take longer because the railway reviews them first.

The exact time varies with your bank or payment mode, so treat any figure as an estimate. Refunds go back to the source you paid from, not to a different account.

Which refund rule applies to my situation?

Match your situation to one row, and you will know what to expect. This is a summary of the sections above, as of 2026.

Your situation What you get back
You cancel a confirmed ticket 48+ hours out Fare minus flat clerkage
You cancel a confirmed ticket 12 to 48 hours out Fare minus the higher of flat clerkage or 25%
You cancel a confirmed ticket 4 to 12 hours out Fare minus the higher of flat clerkage or 50%
Waitlisted ticket, before or at chart Fare minus ₹60 per passenger
RAC ticket cancelled before the chart Fare minus flat clerkage
Railway cancels the train Full fare, normally automatic
Confirmed Tatkal, you cancel Nothing

If your case is not here, check IRCTC's own refund status page for your ticket. Two people on the same train can be in different rows, so check each ticket.

How do I avoid losing money on refunds?

The best way to protect your money is to book with firm dates and cancel, if you must, more than 48 hours before departure. At that point you lose only the flat clerkage.

Booking on the day your window opens helps too. The booking window opens 60 days ahead at 8:00 AM IST, and the booking window calculator shows your opening date. When you get your first-choice train and date, you are less likely to book a backup that you later pay to cancel.

If you keep missing that 8:00 AM opening, Train Genie sends a free email reminder before your T-60 and Tatkal windows. You can set one up on the booking reminder page.

What is the last moment to cancel?

Chart preparation is the practical deadline. As of 2026 the first chart is prepared about 8 hours before departure. For trains leaving between 5:00 AM and 2:00 PM, it is prepared by about 9:00 PM the previous night.

So for a morning train, cancel the evening before. Our chart preparation time guide explains how it works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does IRCTC refund the full amount if I cancel a confirmed ticket?

A: No. Cancelling a confirmed ticket yourself always costs at least the flat clerkage for your class. Closer to departure you lose 25% or 50% of the fare, and under 4 hours before departure you get nothing back.

Q: Do I need to cancel a waitlisted ticket myself?

A: No. If it is still waitlisted when the chart is prepared, IRCTC cancels it and refunds the fare minus ₹60 per passenger. You can also cancel it earlier yourself at the same deduction.

Q: Is the Tatkal charge refunded?

A: No. The Tatkal charge is not returned, even when the base fare is refunded for a cancelled train or a waitlisted ticket that did not confirm.

Q: When do I need to file a TDR?

A: File a TDR when the refund is not automatic but you have a valid reason, such as a delay of over three hours at your boarding station or an AC failure. File it before the train departs where the rule requires it.

Q: Where does the refund go?

A: To the original payment method you used to book. IRCTC does not send refunds to a different bank account or wallet.

Most refund headaches start with a rushed booking. Get a free email reminder from Train Genie for your T-60 and Tatkal windows on the booking reminder page, and book the right ticket the first time.
